Annotation

The verses written by the contemporary poet A. S. Kushner are often deemed philosophical. This essay analyzes the poem “In the dank forest, in its deep shadows…” dated 1978. The poem ends with an elevated solace: Socrates’ disciples are listening to him. But together with them are disciples of his disciples, their successors of future generations. And if you “associate yourself ” with history by spanning the centuries, you might well see yourself in the Socrates circle.
