HEGEL ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BIBLE AND ITS CONTENTS FOR RELIGIOUS THINKING
Annotation
In Hegel’s understanding, the Bible is the core of the absolute form of Christian religiosity,
which combines the objectivity of thinking and the subjectivity of feeling in a religious sense.
Without the Bible, religion could not have reached a form adequate to the historical level of Christianity, for which feeling, representation and conceptual thinking turn out to be equally
necessary ways of cognition and pass into each other, and personal piety and theological
education turn out to be equally necessary forms of religious consciousness. Hegel develops a
method of interpreting Holy Scripture based on the actualization of universal thinking as the
primary source of all knowledge and all utterance. In the process of establishing his method,
Hegel finally overcomes the atheistic attitudes of the Enlightenment and returns thinking to the
mainstream of the Christian tradition, which is also reflected in his interpretation of biblical texts.
