The article addressed the review of the physicality poetics in the stories “The Merry Gentleman” by I. S. Shmeleva and “The Wild Squire” by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin. Somatic elements are an important means of creating images of heroes. Food theme, digestion in works of both writers go beyond the category of physicality and are introduced as a principle of living arrangements and social hierarchy. In both cases, the accents shift from the upper body area (“face” and “head”) to the sphere of the physiological bottom (“belly”, “stomach”). The physicality dynamics dates to N. V. Gogol and demonstrates the tragic human derogation as an evolution from anthropomorphic to zoomorphic somatic images.
