Annotation

The work examines a number of issues raised in the recently published book by Tatjana N. Jackson “Knýtlinga saga”: translation and commentaries, researches (St. Petersburg, 2021) – for example, the features and accuracy of the first Russian translation of the aforementioned Icelandic saga, its place in the Russian and world historiography; an overview of commentaries, geographical maps and articles given by the author in appendices, etc. Some attention is paid to the language of the work, the transmission of its prose and poetic material in Russian. The saga itself is also briefly reviewed as an important source on the history of Denmark, Germany, the Baltic Slavs and so on. The literary source is placed in the context of numerous documents from Northern Europe from the 10th to 13th centuries, in a wide corpus of Scandinavian sagas and its translations.
