Annotation

The famous representative of the second “wave” of Russian emigration, philosopher, culturologist and historian Nikolai Ivanovich Ulyanov (1904–1985) was one of the first former Soviet citizens who turned to the analysis of the cultural phenomenon of the Russian abroad. It should be especially emphasized that N. I. Ulyanov was a younger contemporary of the Silver Age and the achievements of the Russian emigration were for him an organic continuation of the Russian culture of the beginning of the century. Professional historian N. I. Ulyanov was one of the first Russian thinkers who appreciated the contribution of the culture of the first emigration to world civilization. The article by N. I. Ulyanov “Culture and Emigration” is analyzed, which is entirely devoted to the topic under study. The article shows the responses of contemporaries to this article by the historian, the controversy surrounding this work. The evolution of N. I. Ulyanov on the culture and self-awareness of the Russian emigration. The argumentation of his supporters and opponents is shown, dedicated to the future of the Russian emigration. The topic of patriotism of compatriots abroad, who glorified Russia even in forced exile, is considered. Particular attention is paid to the famous articles of N. I. Ulyanov “After Bunin” and “Ten Years”. The features of the historian’s perception of party spirit in culture and political influence on literature are revealed. His views on the elitism of the culture of the Russian emigration are shown.
